the man with the
midas touch!!
I've just watched Hana-Bi (top notch film btw for anyone who hasn't
seen it my favourite Kitano movie so far!!) and on my DVD theres a
cool li'l documentary where it transpires that not only did he do
his usuall trick of writing/directing while simultaneously playing
the lead!! but he ALSO painted all the pictures (of which there are
a fair few) and wrote the films memorable score personally!! jeez
he's like that annoying kid at school who's excellent at EVERYTHING
is there anything this guy sucks at???!? also on a little side
not...(going for a long post here) theres a kinda mini filmography
before the documentary in which 2 films stand out (mainly cos theres
no guns in em!!) the 1st is a frankly bizarre comedy thing I didn't
catch the title of but I gotta see cos its so...odd! and a film
called Kids Return starring a young-looking Ando Masanobu (with
normal hair!!) any info on these 2 films? much appreciated...ta

Disco has to wonder what the man would be like in bed. Does he
excell at that too? I imagine he'd be pretty "take control" with
that one as well.
"No, no! Move your LEFT thigh OVER the
melon! Now - squeeze internally for 5 seconds on ten-second
intervals... NOOOO! YOU FOOL! Can't you do ANYTHING
right?"
"...Sorry, Dad".

He even painted the picture at the end of Battle Royale. I'd LOVE
to have a poster made of that!

Masanobu
Andou
Kiriyama, the title of the comedy probably is "Getting Any?", and
"Kids Return" HAS guns on it! Not many though, hehe, I got your
point... Kids return was Masanobu Andou's debut in movies. He was
casted by Kitano himself. The two kids were chosen because they
seemed the most insecure of the whole bunch of kids who applied for
the roles, as he says in an interview!
A note: I'm not sure,
but Andou has a nice physical condition, and he moves very well in
the boxing sequences. I almost could tell that he really does boxing
in his real life! I had seen Andou in "Kids Return" before
"Battle Royale", and I was surprised to see that the shy kid would
turn out to be an awesome villain!
I really don't know much
of "Getting Any?", but i've got "Kids Return". It's a story about
two kids who don't fit into the strict rules of japan's educational
system, so, in those terms, they're considered 'losers'. It's
really a Kitano auto-portrayal, cause Kitano himself quit school,
and saw yakuza and baseball stars as his role models.
One of
the kids end up being part of the local Yakuza, and the other stays
at the boxing club. The two fail in both courses too, and end up
where they started.

Hana-Bi is truly one of the greatest films ever. No other film
maker can mix comedy and tragedy in the way Beat can.
I've
also seen a documentry about Beat (it was on Channel 4 afew years
ago) and it showed a short clip from a film with Beat doing a comedy
routine with the other half of the "Two Beats". I think it was the
first time they's performed for a while or something. Does anyone
know what film its from?

Re: Beat

Yeah, that's the one.
It goes something like
"I
wanted to be a banker"
"What with a face like
that?!"
Or something similar, I can't remember now, my memory
ain't what it used to be.

A theory on
Japanese actors ...
Ok, so I'm guessing that instead of the Western version of "Six
Degrees of Kevin Bacon", in Japan they must have "Six Degrees of
Takeshi Kitano".
But judging by the amount of film work he does, they could reduce it
to, like, "The Two degrees of ..."

Re: A theory on

Gee, that'd be just about ALL of 'em!
"Sword of vengeance", the first in the series, is the absolute best.
It's by far the most violent. And besides that, it's the darkest of
them all. Not just for the body count, but for the fact that Ogami's
fight against the Emporor really seems like a lost cause. He will
NEVER have the chance to sleep, because someone will always be sent
to kill him. It's a very foreboding film with a feeling of
"helplessness".
Also referred to as the "Baby Cart" series,
the movies go as follows: 1) Sword of Vengeance (1972) 2) Baby
Cart at the River Styx (also 1972) 3) Baby Cart to Hades (sorta
silly in my opinion) (1973) 4) Baby Cart in Peril (also '73)
[worth the price of admission if only for the topless female
assassin
] 5) Baby Cart in the Land of Demons (haven't seen it) 6)
White Heaven in Hell (haven't seen it)
