hmm, well, I thought I'd go ahead and make a misc thread... noticed
alot of these threads verre off into other tanjents, so some of us
loud mouthed >) members need a romping ground to just vent all of
our misc thoughts. talk about anything and everything here so we can
keep the other threads a little less bogged down.
although
this thread is a rant in itself, I guess I'll start it with
something...... um...... ::looks around:: ok, what's everyone's fav
videogame(s)? I like mostly rpgs and the such, ie ff7-8. but I
really got hooked on Delta Force: Land Warrior... that game was so
much fun! but recently, my stupid ip uses firewalls and many servers
and has the worst connection ever! it times out soooooooo often!!!
so eventially I had to uninstall it and havent been able to
reinstall it cause my comp is gone crazy... anyways, there's a new
game by the US ARMY!!! it is absoultely free to everyone in the
world!! download it in june! it looks like the best fps I have ever
seen!
while I'm thinkin bout it, who likes anime? I do! my
fav series include lain, evangelion, ranma, full moon o sagashite,
onegai sensei, project ako, sorcerer hunters and to heart... hehe,
lotsa favs, but hey, I got lotsa series... sigh, I have even more
downloaded (not licensed here) that I have yet to watch.... ok,
that's enough rambling for me now.

Aha! This is my kind of thread, freedom to ramble without the
sheepish feeling you get at when you finish the post then look up
and remember what the thread was originally called.
As for
games, I've never really dabbled in pc games, but I've had some fun
with consoles (hmm, that sounds a little dodgy). I like rpgs too,
been having fun with FF4 (released in the UK a couple of weeks ago
for the first time! - funnily, though I've been interested in Japan
for a long time and enjoyed all sorts of imports, I've never taken
the step to import gaming. Probably just as well, barely got enough
cash fer DVDs
)
Also got a soft spot for anime, Lain is cool, if a bit odd.
Evangelion is mainly odd, but the weirder it got the more I enjoyed
it. Faves include Nadia of the Sea of Mystery and Laputa, Castle in
the Sky. Oh and Cowboy Bebop and Flame of Recca are pretty cool too.

Re: Jibba

My favorite game series is the Sakura Taisen series, but I'm also a
big fan of the Lunar series and the Devil Summoner/Persona/Megami
Tensei series. As far as fighting games go, I'm dig the King of
Fighters series (pre-2k) and Capcom vs. SNK 2.
I used to be a
huge anime fan, but I've been really disappointed with the majority
of the series to have been produced in the last few years. My top
three favorites are Fushigi no Umi no Nadia, Macross 7, and Rurouni
Kenshin (although the manga is better).
I tend mainly read
manga instead of watch anime. My three favorite manga are Eden's
Bowy, Meitantei Conan and Jigoku Sensei Nube.

Oho! So it's anime ya wants to talk about, is it? Ok, ore no
ichiban daisuki na anime wa Ranma Nibunno ichi. 'Kedo manga no Ranma
motto okashii to omou .. I also like Arare-chan, Doraemon, Tetsuwan
Atomu, Crayon-Shin Chan, Tenshi Muuyo, DRAGONBALL (yappari
), and Meitantei Conan.
I used to get a kick out of Neon
Genesis Evangelion, but I really thought the ending to that series
sucked big time. (Can still sing the theme song at karaoke with the
best of 'em, though
.
As for the games: I never really got into playing games on
a computer. Not as "fun". Hard to say, but you know what I mean.
Loses atmosphere in my computer room... Lurve the fighting games.
Good at all of 'em. Used to like platformers too.

As far as anime goes, I love situation comedys like Love Hina and
Maison Ikkoku. Also Ranma 1/2 has always been a favorite (though VIZ
still hasn't completed the series over here in the us and Hong Kong
doesn't have an english subbed collection out yet) My overall
favorite series ever is Cardcaptor Sakura. Never thought I could
love a clamp series so much.
I'm also a big time online
gamer. Started with Ultima Online, then when OSI bit the big one and
decided to screw us fantasy fans, I went to Anarchy Online which I
am very caught up in at the moment. Console games usually have the
square name branded on them before I'll play them. Or any resident
evil game.

Before going out tonight i turned the telly on and was assaulted by
2 hours of Card Captors - well actaully I turned off after about 15
minutes, the voice acting was not good...(I'd seen some episodes of
the original before and it was quite fun, though I was a little
taken aback by the homo-erotic undertones in what appeared to be a
toon aimed at the younger set - I assume that's not in the US
versh) Anyway I just found it amusing for a UK mainstream
terrestrial network was showing an anime marathon at kiddie teatime
when just 5 short years ago Manga ent's video releases inspired
enlighted newspaper headlines like 'stop these evil snuff cartoons'

Please dont watch that horrid, Horrid, HORRID Nelvana dubbed
"CARDCAPTORS"!!! Its been gutted, reworked, and completely trashed
because Nelvana thought that American children couldn't take to a
female heroine!! (c'mon, kero is a surfer dude? Tomoyo....ER Madison
is a valley girl????)
Pioneer has released the DVD's in
japanese over here for the past year. (thats how I came across it,
actually through NetFlix) They are well subbed and theres four
episodes per DVD. If you want to save a little, theres a Hong Kong
company that sells the entire series in an 8 DVD box set that is
wonderful (its just missing the "Leave it to Kero end takes") You
can usually find someone on e-bay that has it listed for around
$75-$100.
I kinda stumbled into it. Not being into the
clamp, little magical girl hype. I thought it would be cookie cutter
clamp. My husband got the first DVD through Netflix because he
thought I might like it. I think its really the most beautiful all
around series. Thats why I take the Nelvana butchering so personally
(as do most of the fans of the Japanese series). They really twisted
a fantastic story into americanized crap.

yeah, the
ending of eva sucks!!! thank goodness the director knew that and
made the whole "end of eva" series... like a 3 part ending.... watch
that instead of ep24-26... you'll be much more satisfied!

i know what you all mean about Card Captors Sakura. I've only
watched it while in hosptial and there was nothing else 4 me to do
at 1am lying in bed recovering from operation. I think SOME dubbing
can fit very well in anime - like Ninja Scroll, I thought the
dubbing and voice acting fitted those characters perfectly.
Especially for the 8 Devils of Kimon. But anyway, here I was
listening to some yellow ... THING flying about and saying in a
thick Canadian accent:
"Hey, Sakooora! What do you think yer
doing, Sakooora?" Dammit, they even said "aboot". I was waiting for
him to say "Eh?" too...

Oh its much worse than that......
They snipped it, and
slashed it. They put all of the episodes out of order and even put 5
episodes into one in some case. Why the hell did the want to make Li
the main character???????
Nelvana claims that they didn't
believe American audiences were ready for a female heroine. What a
wonderful PC world we live in.
*shakes head in shame*

Its now Sa-kooo-ra. Talk about lame.
And just try to tell
Nelvana about Sailor Moon. All companies like that see is an easy
money making idea. Simple: buy a great beloved japanese anime
series, then warp it and dub it with typical Saturday morning voice
overs. Oh, and throw in some extremely whiny terrible soul theme
song. "Cardcaptors, a magic adventure!!....." "gotta catchem
all......" yadda yadda, ad nauseum

Re: hmm
I don't have a problem with dubbing animation (though who takes
dubbed live-action seriously?) as long as it's done well. I can even
cope with a little localisation on kids' shows to match the target
audiance (especially, as in the case of Sakura, where the unedited
version is available domestically). But I feel that a lot of these
companies underestimate their audience and sell them short. If
they're aiming for lowest common denominator, they could have bought
any old show a lot cheaper, not hired any of those pesky expensive
translators and made up their own stories.
Taking of which,
Much as I used to love Monkey! as a kid (and enjoy it still), whose
idea was it to entrust the translation and scripting to a bloke who
spoke not a word of the original language. Ah well, I guess it
worked for em.

Re: Dubbed
stuff
I agree, there have been some really well done dubs. I love the
ranma dub and found myself prefering the american actors over the
japanese when I bought the recent Viz DVD. I guess after 7 years of
hearing those familar voices, it was hard to go back.
Bad:
DONT watch the dubbed Ping Pong Club. Veeery bad idea...... (some
things need to stay pure)
