Japanese
Say I seriously wanted to learn Japanese from scratch. How hard a
time would I have exactly?

Well they say interest is the best teacher, if you put the effort
in and you like learning it then maybe you could have a good grasp
of it within a year and a half (i am talking about speaking, not the
writing) it is all down to how much you want to learn it. If you are
serious and do the study then you can do it.

Re:

You'll have a tough time of it at first if you're like me. I made
good grades, but my head hurt devilishly fierce trying to cram in three
different writing systems and adapt to the whacked-out sentence
structure. Things settled down by the end of the first semester,
made sense in the second, and by the third I was chirping away like
an annoying little bird!
You may catch on faster than I did,
though, so you shouldn't let this story bother you too much.
Learning Japanese may be tough, but it's strangely addictive.

Re:

The first part is always the hardest. You probably WILL want to
give up after 6 months. God knows, I did. But honestly, once you
have a working understanding of how it's all put together, it's then
just a matter of constantly building up your vocabulary. Don't
worry too much about the kanji, not even the Japanese can really
remember it well. (!) Try immersion techniques like I did. Watch
Japanese movies, read Japanese manga. At all times, have a
Japan-English dictionary with you, so when that annoying word you
always forget comes up again, look it up. Try to think of what you
just said to someone in Japanese. Run random sentences through your
head. But above all, "feel" the force - and do not give in to the
dark side.

Well I ordered that Oxford Take Off In Japanese book/cd combo to
begin with. I'll see how it goes from that. Quite cheap too I must
say! Only £20!

Re:

I just got that book today (I got the 4 CD pack and it was still
ony £26!...class!) and so far I really like it it seems
intelligently put together and its got a good mix of audio (perfect
for me seeing as I don't have access to a Japanese speaker often)
and activites, vocab lists and all sorts of things. I did units 1.1
and 1.2 today ad found em fairly easy to get to grips with, and from
those 2 fairly basic units I found I'd learnt a fair few new words.
Incidently if ever you wanna try out your basic roumaji online feel
free to start a thread in the Nihongo forum and I'm bound to chime
in

Re:

Yeah thats the pack I got (it comes to near enough £26 once postage
is added!). I also got this other one which I was advised to get
called Easy Japanese by this guy who I can't remember off hand.
Anyhow, my japanese so far is limited to "hello" so maybe
once I've gota grip of the basics I can practice it on the Nihongo
forum.

Making out in
Japan(ese)?
LOL! If it's the series written by the white guy and illustrated by
his Japanese wife (vol. 1 had a large male/female symbol on the
cover) I read those suckers back in '90 when I first started
studying Japanese! They still print those?! LOL. Those were pretty
straightforward and free of slang (as I recall) so they should have
aged alright.
As for moldy oldies, though, might as well bring
up "Japanese Street Slang" by Constantine and that one by Seward,
"Bad Japanese" or something like that. Those two are so horribly
outdated it makes zero sense for you to take the time to study them,
unless your idea of a "far out" good time is to ring your friends on
the "Alexander Graham" and start "putting on the Ritz." Avoid!
(p/s - the above terms don't actually appear in the books,
I'm just trying to illustrate how outdated the Japanese is, from
words that no one uses anymore to ones that are flat-out "dead" and
unknown by anyone under 50).
And by the way, Wicked Japanese,
while devilishly amusing, has pretty wretched translations. Should
probably avoid that one as well.

Re: Making out

I have that one, too!! I ALSO used it as a good starting point. Too
bad he puts it all in a Tokyou accent, though. Ie: "Jyoudan
jaNEEEyo!"
However, there were some classics in that book
which have helped me no end. Case in point:
"Mou ashitenai
kara, denwa bango kaeru!"
