why is The Ring
(originals and remake) so popular?
my fiance liked the movie, enough to see it 4 times with me, but he
wonders why i'm so interested in all of the background information,
and this forum. a friend also asked me, why are you so into this
story? others friends are just as obsessed as i am
*lol*
theory 1: this is The Exorcist of this generation. it's
so new, shocking and haunting that we don't just want to see it, we
want to be a part of it, even if it's only a discussion group. can
you imagine if the 'net was around as it is today when The Exorcist
came out? i'm sure there would have been a lot of discussion, pic
trading, bootlegs, etc.
theory 2: there's something primally
fascinating about wanting to see little kids get revenge. especially
little girls. i for one am scared, excited but most of all
*thrilled* when Samara comes out of the TV ... i end up practically
cheering for her!
theory 3: the collective unconscious. The
Ring taps into so much societal dream/nightmare imagery, and from
what i can tell so do the originals. i'm fascinated with *any* movie
where i see my own dreams and nightmares coming to life on the
screen. i was obsessed with Dark City when it came out, because of
the elongating stairways, the twisting changing cityscapes, the
doors appearing out of nowhere.
any more theories? or just
personal observances? geez i hate to be a Ringworm without
justification *lol*
peace, mellybeanTC

I think I just like getting people to watch them and then watching
their reactions.

I addtion to what you said, I believe that the story and plot
devices have touched a nerve in our new techno-junky age (that did
not exist when the Excorsist came out). This movie has subverted our
comfortable relationship with and dependencies on 'benign' devices
such as VCRs, TVs, and telephones. It's kind of like the unexpected
demonizing of the Pillsbury Doughboy in Ghostbusters.

Gonna speak for myself here.
Personally, I never liked the
movies. Ring was boring, Ring 2 was slightly better and I liked Ring
0, but as a drama movie and thought it wasn't a horror movie at
all.
I'm sticking around this forum and like the background
information though, because the backstory of the series as a whole
is very interesting. Here we have a psychic, who basically
transcends the dead to take revenge and make people suffer. She's
different from most psychics, because her power is so great that
she's not limited to the material realm and no one is safe from her.
And to top it off, evil wins this time
The series is just plain interesting, and the details are
very well-crafted and thought out, enough to interest me whereas the
movies didn't.

I think it is because it is something different and very original.
The storyline in the ring is so unique in its own way making it
scary and creepy, but at the same time, may make you feel sorry for
the evil character Samara/ Sadako.

From a review of
Ring (original).....
"The brilliance of RING is the way in which the film embraces the
aesthetics of Japan's traditional Ghost story while presenting it's
tale in a thoroughly modern context. The movie succeeds in making
computers, televisions, and video tapes seem unearthly and
threatening. In the film, modernity offers no refuge from the
vengeful spirits of the netherworld."

I went to see The Ring because of Naomi Watts. Yup,
I think she is gorgeous. But as in your case, I ended up obsessed
about the movie. Not good I tell ya.
