Re: japantoday
article on naomi watts/ringmake
I think it sucks that Japanese viewers who were privvy to the
original constantly degrade american audiences for liking the
version that we have seen. Personally, I found the Japanese version
lacking, but of course, I'm an american so I must not know what I'm
talking about. I think that there are some cultural differences that
would lend themselves to be misunderstood to one and the other.
However, I am really tired of this. The story is created and owned,
proliferated to say the least, by the Japanese, but we, americans,
have set sail on the storm. We should not be detracted as glommers
on, we appreciate cinema as much as you do, we should celebrate the
differences, in our appreciation of the ring.

Thanks for the Naomi pic, miharu. I have no problem with the
outfit; I think it's a very cute nightie.

I think viewers comments on Japantoday disscussion are not by
Japanese. I think foreigners live in Japan wrote those
messeges. Because Japantoday's readers are mostly foreigners live
in Japan.
I'm Japanese, living in Japan. EveryJapanese
saw The Ring say that Naomi watts's acting is waay better than
Nanako Matushima-originals counterpart- 's it. Lot of Japanese
criticise that Nanako is a mediocure soap-opera acting type bad
actress in common sense.

damn straight, nanako matsushima is a horrible actress.. especially
when in dramas. despite that, i really liked majou no jouken.
^^; you're right, most of the people posting on that article are
definitely gaijin, living in japan or not.

Re:
gaijin
I've encountered this term a lot here and, as a non-Japanese
speaker, am curious what it means. Is it a pejorative term for
westerners?

Re:

it just means foreigners (as in pertaining to japan), it's a pretty
benign term but sometimes is used in a demeaning manner.

Re:

It literally means "an outside person" or a person who is outside
of your normal group of association. It's a hard concept for
Americans to grasp of just how ethnically UNdiverse Japan is. Being
a white male myself going to Japan was the first time I've ever
consciously felt in the minority.

yeah, i thought that Naomi Watts did a very good acting job for the
female role. Not perfect because there were some parts that I would
have just redone, but certainly better than Nanako. I did not like
Nanako all that much and that's probably why I did not like Ringu
all that much. But Martin Henderson did a mediocre job acting while
Sanada Hiroyuki in my opinion did a very nice job on Ringu for the
male character. I guess it sort of balances it out.

Yep, Sanada is my all Ringu fave actor, too.

if you want a better scope of naomi's acting abilities, watch
mulholland drive. she's absolutely amazing and i'm not just saying
that because of the surprisingly hot lesbian scene ;p

mulholland
drive
watched it again...and i did not like her acting as a good girl. It
felt fake and plastic. Her acting as a trashy and sexually liberated
woman is super. I loved it. I think that she is really good at the
dramatic scenes, but that's it. The lesbian scenes did not do
anything for me, but her performance was good there.

Re: mulholland

the fake and sugary acting was on purpose. at first i was annoyed
by the nancy drew act, but after the second time i saw it, i
realized exactly why it was there and why it seemed to be so
horribly acted all around. i don't want to spoil anything for anyone
that hasn't seen it, but keep in mind the opening sequence during
the credits and immediately after. the bedsheets and labored
breathing...
if you don't totally get what i mean, go here

I believe that Naomi Watts made her mark with this film, although
underappreciated, certainly, in America, I don't know how this
triumphant piece of film making from David Lynch was perceived
outside of America. I thought this was one of the most artistic and
relevnat pieces of film making that I have seen to date.

sorry about that link, once my webserver is fixed I can put up the
proper picture. All it is, is a picture of Naomi Watts with a shirt
that says "I sucked it good."
It kind of lost its impact :(
