I think Katie's was more effective than Noah's by virtue of the
fact that you saw it first. When Noah died, you knew what he would
look like, although it was a stroke of genius on Gore Verbinski's
(or his editor's) part to not show his face right away, which is
what one would expect. Initially, it was purely Naomi Watts'
reaction that conveyed the horror of the scene. Then, when you
thought you weren't going to have to see it - BAM!!!
Also,
the scene that showed Katie's corpse had that musical stinger; I
can't remember if Noah's did or not.
In any case, those two
faces have haunted me since I saw the film.

Okay...there
was no "stinger" music for Noah. The only times it would do that
would be when you see Rachel's reaction or when they actually show
him. When they actually show him, it was during the SM0015 video
flashback at the conclusion. When they flashed the corpses, there
was no stinger music.
BTW, that stinger music was really
effective. [twitch]

The stinger is effective only at the right moment in movies. I have
seen them misused so many times. But in the ring, it proved to be
most effective. *curses the person who put the pictures up, cuz
everytime she replies she has to scroll down and see that damned
pic*

Yeah, its not all that good of a pic of her in the closet though.
Its too dark and in the theatre it was much more scary. I d/l-ed the
movie from kazaa and the movie was all dark too so i could barely
see katies face. I guess i can just wait till the actual movie comes
out on dvd or something.

Katie's picture in the closet is so effective because we are
totally not expecting it. I mean, sure, there we are watching a
scary movie, and we know we're going to be scared, but what's so
scary about watching people doing dishes? La la la I'm safe in this
part, I was thinking. Yeah right. All of a sudden, out of nowhere,
BAM!! they flash Katie's corpse on the screen. OH MY GOD, I said it
right out loud, I was scarred for life, I didn't know what to expect
for the rest of the movie! People driving in cars, walking through
doors, doing normal things, should be safe, but who knows in this
movie, because if I can get the $hit scared out of me when I'm
watching people doing dishes, ANYTHING else could be scary too. I
had no clue from that moment on when to cover my eyes. Most horror
movies, like I say, give you a clue. Then again, that open
refrigerator door should have been my FIRST clue that this would be
an unpredictable movie (in the sense of knowing when something scary
was coming up).

They do show Noah's face.... Later after he has died. But just for
a second so you'd have to capture the pic really quickly. I guess
thats why I cant find it yet. If anyone knows where I can find it or
has it saved pleeeease post it

and what video its from.
I emailed that person who put that high quality pic of Noah's face,
the quality of that is good so was it taken from a file downloaded
off kazaa or something?? TMD Movie one on Kazaaa is really shitty
quality, but anyone know how to track that high quality one down?

why Katie's
corpse scares us
Not only do we *not* expect to see Katie in the closet at that part
in the movie (I mean, what's safer than watching sisters do dishes,
right?), but for the previous few minutes of the movie we've been
smothered by that picture in the frame on the (coffee table? in the
living room? with the candlestick?) And we have this image in our
heads of a beautiful young girl, really beautiful because that was a
school picture, and in one second we go from seeing asthetically
pleasing young girl to something ugly, and we are SO not ready for
it that it is even more shocking, repulsive and scary than it would
have been if katie's corpse were:
a) taken out of context - ie
you just happen upon it, like say you never saw the movie but you
see the screenshot somewhere on the web.
b) shown right after the
"wet doorknob" part.
that was REALLY effective.
