The Ring has top
Ringu gross in Japan (Naomi and Matsushima)
The Hollywood remake of Hideo Nakatas 1998 horror Ringu has
already become a bigger hit in Japan than the original, after just
three weeks on release.
Topping the box office chart the
first week after opening on November 2, Gore Verbinskis The Ring
has grossed $8.3m (Y1bn) from 800,000 admissions as of November 17,
from 250 screens nationwide. This compares with the total $6.6m
(Y800m) earned by Ringu.
However, it still has a long way to
go to beat the Japanese sequel, Ringu 2, which grossed $28m
(Y3.4bn).
Distributor Asmik Ace, which also produced and
distributed the original film, expects The Ring to finish its first
run with $16.5m - $20.7m (Y2bn - Y2.5bn). "A lot of fans, especially
ones on their twenties, want to compare the remake with the original
film," said Asmik Ace publicist Aya Wakabayashi. "But many fans are
too young to have seen the original in the cinema. For them The Ring
is something totally new."

The
films strong legs - it dipped to number two in its second week, but
came roaring back to number one in its third week - is partly
attributable to Fuji TVs recent broadcast of Ringu on its national
network and a joint appearance by The Rings Naomi Watts and Ringus
Nanako Matsushima at the Tokyo International Film Festival which
received heavy media coverage.

Photo!!
I love the picture of the two actress together, it's like the
joining of the two cultures. I wonder if in the picture it looks
like Matsushima is taller than Naomi.

According to an article I read, this is all a calculated effort of
the Japanese film industry to infiltrate the American market.
Japanese film companies are selling the American rights to their
properties to help garner interest in the original films. It seems
to be working with all the interest in the original Ringu trilogy
and it eventual release in the US. A remake of Don't Look Up is on
the way with other films to follow. And don't forget the American
live action version of Akira. Smart, very smart indeed.

Matsushima Nanako:
"Ring" was the first film that I had a starring role in. It was a
big hit that even became a drama series. It grew and grew, until
finally I heard that Hollywood was remaking it, which made me really
happy. Every night, I nervously took pictures to see if there was
any effect. Then, after I heard that it received good reviews in
America, I went and watched it myself, and even though I knew the
story and had been in it, I was still scared... I was watching it
while covering my eyes [laughs]. I think it will definitely be a hit
in Japan too. Everyone, for a good scare, please make your way down
to the theatre to see it. Thank you again and
again.

I tried to download the
video a few different ways and couldn't get it to work. It uses the
RTSP protocol, and there aren't many downloaders that support it. I
tried HiDownload 1.15, which claimed to support RTSP, but it didn't.
I also tried Offline Exporer Pro 2.6, which downloaded the file, but
the file wouldn't play.

That was really great! The only thing I would change is that when
Nanako says, "Nandomo onegai
shimasu" she's referring back to the
seeing the movie, the sentence where she asks people to go to their
local theater and see it. This bit literally means, "I humbly
request times without number again" but would be better translated
in plain, normal English as "Agan and again, please" or "Many times,
please".
But like I said before, great job on the
translation!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention
that the first thing that Naomi says before her speech is, "Watashi
wa Naomi desu" ("I'm Naomi"). And of course she says "Thank you" for
the flowers as she receives them from Nanako.
