The Ring (all
films, books etc) was she ever defeated??
Obviously this was never answered in the Remake, but in all the
material relating to this series, was Sadako / Samara ever defeated,
or the curse / virus ever stopped?
If so, how was it done

In the books, never, up until Rasen, at least. Humanity gets
wasted.
Just watched Japanese Ring and Ring 0, so far, I
don't know if she's defeated in Ring 2.

nope she doesn't get defeated in Ring 2, well, she does in the
sense that Mai and Yoichi get away but she's still around just
waiting for the next victim. She is reduced to a brain in a jar for
the Dreamcast game though, and if that aint defeat I dunno what is!!

see this is what I dont understand..The remake keeps her as a
metaphysical being, a ghost if you will...How does she take physical
form again in the sequel, or is it that the remake didnt really
portray what the series was really like...I got the distinct sense
what crawled out of the TV was not her being phsyically there, just
a means to the end at the 7 day mark.

she doesn't take physical form in the sequel. Not Ring 2, anyway. I
have yet to watch Rasen, I understand she is reborn in that, via her
virus impregnating people. The timeline of the novels explains that
the curse was really a virus, and that you get sick and die after 7
days. The movies seemed to portray it as more of a curse, like, "do
what I want, or I will come for you in 7 days." You just have to
figure out what the spirit wants, rather than finding a cure within
7 days.

so the virus is transmitted by watching the tape? That seems a bit
weak compared to the supernatural take, the fact its a virus
completely dulls this series down for me...A curse seems to fit so
much better...also why does Sadako appear if its the virus that
kills you in 7 days, and not actually her

this is where the books and the movies separate, The virus is a
product of the books and is irrelevant to the movies (except Rasen
but i'm referring to the canon of Ring,2,and 0) and in the books
there is no appearance from Sadako when your time is up! For a

Oh yes... the curse... you've got to find a way to survive the
curse... before day 7...
meanwhile, you'll lead armies of
monsters and do a lot of running, fighting, and shooting of all
sorts of deadly creepy crawly certainly non-human things, leap
impossible walls and crevices, collecting an array of weapons, and
maybe... just maybe... actually thinking of doing something halfway
related to that curse you've since forgotten about in all the
gunfire and bloodletting.
Now that's a worthy Ring
game...

Yes
The Ring television miniseries (where characters die after 13 days)
had Sadako being defeated when the doctors successfully created an
antibody to the virus. And not a moment too soon; in this version a
high school girl was just preparing to show the cursed video to her
homeroom class in order to save herself.

So what happens
if people keep spreading the video tape
and every single person who sees it makes a copy for someone else?
Nobody ever dies then?
If thats so, then what happens if the
whole world views the tape and makes a copy? Samara's curse comes to
an end?

They worked it out mathematically (somewhat shadily, too) in the TV
series - The last group of people to get the tape will not have
anyone to show it to, because the rest of the world will have
already seen it. This group contains the largest number of people in
it of all the previous groups; it's the bottom of the pyramid. One
in four people will die.
They also talked about people who would
die rather than show it to anyone else. In the end, Sadako's hatred
is defeated by good, old fashioned, sappy-ass love.
Except, of
course, for the roughly one in four of us who will die horrible
deaths.
In the books... (bwa) something entirely different happens
(bwa-ha). You should check out (BWA-ha-ha) the timeline (snort) on
the Ringworld main page (BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA). I, for one (giggle) found
it very, very cool (degenerates completely into loud, long, maniacal
laughter).
