Strange
Character
I cant find any other threads of this, so who is that guy with the
hat on that island with the dead horses. I think he was either in
the video or the newspaper, and that he had some significance,
albeit a small one. Whats with that guy?
A pic will be here soon. hehe cant wait |

Re: Strange

This guy? Obviously a sheriff or other government/law enforcement
figure investigating the horse
deaths.

probably not, but i don't think we'll know for sure until a sequel
of some sorts.. they don't really provide any other leads on the
character on the website or movie other than that picture.

I strikes me as an unnatural picture to use for the story. The item
of interest is the horse and the puzzlement of the immediate
bystanders. Having the stiff, authoritarian figure standing in the
foreground defocussing attention and staring in an unrelated
direction seems stupid to me. Is it a recruitment ad or or a news
item? Sorry, the compoistion of this shot bugs me for some reason.

Re: ?
actually, it's pretty typical of newspapers to run photos like
this. they wouldn't want to focus in on anything dead, and why not
put the investigator (and head investigator at that) in the
foreground? sorry if i sound too sure of myself, i work at a
newspaper and have to look at the pictures that editors decide upon
almost as much as the text they use. if that makes any sense...

Ooooh, new theory cooking up. What if Samara was actually the
failed result of a top-secret government experiment? However, they
didn't know it failed until their volunteer (Anna Morgan) to take
care of the child started seeing visions, saying they were from
samara. So Richard, a secret government agent who was against this
experiment from the start, convinced Anna to kill the child, thus
covering up the government's failiure so they could restart and
learn from their mistakes. Yet Anna couldn't take it and killed
herself. So Richard was kept posted at the farm for damage control
and to prevent anyone from snooping too closely.
p.s.
It's just a theory, not my personla belief. But it's fun!

heh.. now that i've taken a good look at the picture of the
article.. man oh man did they do a hack job of making that look like
an actual newspaper article. i have a bunch of reasons that i could
get into, but it would probably bore everyone and prove how anal i
am. just about the only thing they got right is the look of the
photograph ;p

Re: Woooh,

hmmmm, a government conspiracy? Was that doctor part of it ( the
one "killed" by Samara)? That might make sense if so. Then in the
sequel, the strange character will use that sinister look of his and
cause some mischief. Hey, let's get really out there shall we? Why
is he wearing sunglasses in th fall/winter when its not even that
bright out? Maybe he is a Samara thing two, and covering his eyes
prevents him from giving people the look.

Re: Woooh,
Another X-files
yes, actually i do.
before i start into this.. you asked for
it ;p
rule number one of newspaper design: pictures need
captions. how can i tell it isn't flush on the left side of the
page? there would be a credit for the photographer flush right, with
the rest of the caption flush left beneath it. rule number two:
headlines are always in serif fonts (never italicized), sub-heads
are in sans serif fonts (usually italicized). the header of the
first article is in a sans-serif font and the second article has an
italicized serif. both wrong? yes. inconsistant? that too ;p rule
number three (which was followed in the second example, not in the
first): the byline always identifies the agency that the writer
works for whether it be the paper itself or the AP, etc. both
articles appear to be from the Seattle P-I, which is only identified
in one article with an unneeded "Staff Writer" following it
up. rule number four: articles that aren't short briefs (which is
neither article posted above) always feature the first paragraph as
a summary paragraph. while existant in the second article, the first
one either doesn't have one or has an incredibly weakly written
one. rule number five: the location of the subject of the article
is always the first word of the article. this is done in the first
article but not the second.
nitpicky things: in the 1978,
when these papers were supposed to have ran during, type was
hand-cut, waxed and placed on pages to be shot on to negative.. not
so obviously paginated (or done on computer) like these. how can i
tell? i do the hand-cut method every day (yes.. we're behind the
times at my paper ^^;;) the font for the byline of the second
example is absurd and hardly readable. bylines are usually in all
caps as well. the story above it has a strange jumpline: it only
says "Page B-4, Column 1" and doesn't say anything like the standard
"Continued on Page B-4", not to mention that it looks like it's
supposed to be the first article, but if you read both, they're far
from the same article.
thank you for allowing my brain to
vomit up all of this after i get home from work
;p
AAAANNNNNDDD
i have to give dreamworks credit, they
tried really hard. i don't think anyone would have noticed it if
they didn't have to stare at newspaper layout 8 hours a day like i
do.

Newspaper
stuff
Miharu, thanks for the insider view.
What do you think was
the upshot for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer to be featured so
prominently in the movie? It is so front-and-center that I have a
sense that the Pacific Northwest was chosen as a locale almost
expressly so that the Seattle-PI could have such a starring role.
Makes me wonder if one of the Dreamworks insiders is related to
someone at the paper (or together with Martha Stewart, owns a lot of
shares
)
In some ways the movie went out of it's way to refer to
real locations and then stopped short with Moesko Island, Eola, etc.
If they were that concerned about fan mobbing of movie locales, they
certainly provided enough other targets.
In some ways too the
paper didn't get portrayed in an entirely flattering way. EG. The
"Seattle Post-Intelligencer" sign on the ceiling rafter behind
Rachel's desk looked really tacky and I don't think that their HR
dept. necessarily appreciated Rachel's demonstration of wanton
insubordination without consequences.

Re: Woooh,

That's certainly interesting. I love hearing people talk about what
they know, and I don't care how useless and boring the information
may seem. I'm helplessly addicted to knowledge of all
sorts.
The reason I posted that, however, was to point out an
obvious error in the second article, an error which makes it much
worse of a hack job than the first one. You probably didn't notice
it due to not looking for that type of error, but it's very obvious
to the average person.

Re: Woooh,

Besides being really bad writing style, there's a swack of typoes.
"And" becomes "ad" twice. Capitalization error: "I Don't know", etc.
There is a paragraph that is duplicated. And the choice of the
writer's name as "Damien" was dumb, IMO.

Actually, that paragraph is duplicated three times. Once in the
lower left, once in the middle right, and once in the upper right.

Re: Strange

I wonder if all of that (repeating paragraphs, typos, etc.) was a
mistake, or whether they thought it wouldn't matter as it would only
be on the screen for a second or two?
As for the man with the
hat, I don't think he's significant. He's just a cop or something
who was at the scene and was caught in that photo, I expect.

Re: Clone
There's more about En no Odzunu in J's FAQ. Basically Shizuko's
powers are supposed to have developed rapidly after she brought the
stone figure up from the ocean floor. Odzunu was a religious ascetic
who, through his training, gained occult powers such as the ability
to invoke evil spirits.
