SPOILER ALERT:
Re-make plot hole and more questions
I consider it a weakness in the American re-make that no adequate
explanation was provided that tape replication has significance and
is actually desired by Samara. Yes, I know it was said that she
wanted to be heard, but the natural assumption is that she wanted to
be heard for sympathy/understanding instead of to kill. Still, this
angle is a great lead-in to a sequel (which I hope will do justice,
<sigh>).
Also, if having made a copy of the tape had
saved Rachel’s life, why was Samara still trying to kill her as her
time was counting down? Samara, via the floors buckling and the TV
falling, ‘pushed’ Rachel into the well, and a fall from such a
height (even into a few feet of water) is normally fatal. Does
making a copy buy you another 7 days or are you off the hook
completely? Are we to assume that Aidan was saved just by being
present at the tape copying (I recall it being Rachel’s fingers that
were pushing the VTR buttons)? Once the whole world has seen/made a
copy, does the killing stop?
What a rare and well-conceived
story that it raises more questions than answers (or maybe I’m just
dense)!

Re: SPOILER
ALERT
You are just dense is my perspective but I could be wrong. The way
you should be thinking is that Samara really does want her story
told. At the end of the movie Aiden mentions 'so you helped her?'
meaning that Samara did want to be helped in her devious, and
perhaps a bit on the evil side, plan to spread virus or story
depending if you copy or not. No you don't get more time by copying
and showing tape to someone else. You are homefree but never free of
the tape's effects. You are never normal again after The Ring ^_~

Re: Re-make
questions
I don't think those questions are bad at all. I agree that it's not
that clear that Samara wanted the video to spread. I like the
original better in this respect, because you can piece together how
Sadako (Samara) is manipulating Reiko (Rachel) into spreading the
tape. I made a post about this called "Another Remake Difference
*SPOILERS*".
According to the Japanese movies and as
SadakoIsEve said, making a copy and showing it to someone spares
your life, but it doesn't free you completely.
Also, in the
last scene where they were copying the tape, Rachel was guiding
Aidan and pressing his fingers for him. This is how you're
supposed to realize that the act of copying the tape is necessary.
The conversation that follows, and the realization that Samara wants
to be heard, tells you that the tape needs to spread as well.

I don't, the urban legend was there before
Rachel got the tape remember. Now that said, would you believe that
this tape existed and was capable of killing if a few people around
you hadn't died. Not only that but as we saw, the tape actually
forshadows Rachels involvement, like Samara knew she would be
meeting Rachel at some point, then bingo, she gets her neice and a
few of her buds and blamo, you got Rachel, who buy the way, is a
journalist. What better person to have in your camp then a
Journalist, someone paid to tell the story. Perhaps Samara was
counting on her investigative skills to getting what she wanted.
Either way, it worked out for both parties involved, Rachel got her
story, even though it cost her and Samara was indeed
heard.
"Also, if having made a copy of the tape had saved
Rachel’s life, why was Samara still trying to kill her as her time

I think everyone here made this
clear, but it seems that even when you beat your 7 days that you
still remain affected by Sadako, what will happen then is entirely
up to her. So though you won't die on the 7th day, you are not
completely in the clear.

Re: re:SPOILER
ALERT: Re-make plot hole and more questions
samara pushes rachel into the well via the tv falling, because it
allows rachel to find her body and set her free. not to kill rachel.

Rachel's
fall
Well if she wasn't trying to kill Rachel then Samara took an awful
chance dropping her down the well - she could have been killed (4
feet of water is less of a cushion for an adult than it may have
been for Samara). The fact is that both Rachel and Noah figured she
was going to die when the sun went down. I still can't figure out
just how Rachel deduced that her life had been spared as a result of
copying the tape. A brain flash when she was burning the original?
There were, after all, a number of other things she had done that
Noah had not done. Also, please remind me what event or conversation
convinced Rachel that Samara wants to be heard. TIA

Really didn't happen but infering suggests the flash back by
touching Samara's body caused revelation

Re: Rachel's
fall
Spoiler!!!!!!!
This is
another part where the original was a bit clearer. Our favourite
hooded man (literally) pointed out the solution for Reiko in her
apartment. When he appeared on her television screen, he directed
her attention to her bag where the video copy was.
