Heh. And if you didn't notice, there's a brief flickering of a ring on screen just after they mention "before you die, you see the ring". It's nearer to the end of the movie somewhere - I think when Naomi's in the cabin.

I don’t think this item has any special significance vis-à-vis the storyline. Re: Ottoman The ottoman is there when Rachael first visits Noah to analyze the tape. The ottoman is still there just before Samara emerges from the TV in the later sequence. After Rachael discovers Noah’s corpse, you are right, the ottoman is gone. Here’s why I believe that is so: When Samara suddenly reappears a foot away from Noah after being further away when first standing up, Noah lurches back and crashes into the shelf – falling to the floor. He is now on the lower level of the room. He tries to crawl away from the general direction of Samara and the TV (upper level where the chair/ottoman are) to get to the opposite side of the room. Just then, the curse climaxes, he sees the ring, sees Samara’s hideous face – and as far as I am concerned, dies right there on that spot and in that position. However (and I am guessing here) for reasons that only the director may know, and possibly for more dramatic effect, the filmmakers wanted Noah to be discovered seated in the chair, turned away from the entrance instead of as a heap on the floor. Whereas before the chair and ottoman were oriented for watching the TV, now the chair with Noah’s body was oriented about 90 degrees to the right (diametric from the doorway), a few feet further to the right, and with the chair legs in a puddle of water. The ottoman was missing (IMO) because it was not required and would have spoiled the composition of the shot where the central themes were the body, the chair and the puddle of water. It is conceivable that Samara herself arranged the final death positions and locations as her signature and/or in order to achieve a more terrifying effect upon the people discovering the bodies.

The first one is around the moon in the Dreamworks logo at the beginning of the movie. The second one, IIRC, is at the end of Rachel's dream sequence - the one that starts off with her pulling the electrode out of her throat (ewww). You have to pay attention - it's a one- or two-frame flash. There may be more. I may take this crappy rip I have and go through it to see if I can find others. However, this is a really good excuse to go to the theater again.

Since the headline is "Parole Pending After Hea" (the newspaper is folded), the word "ring" is cut off the page! It's also the same newspaper where Noah leaves his coffee ring. The child killer was played by Chris Cooper, who's better known in recent memory as the homophobic neighbor who kills Kevin Spacey's character in "American Beauty."
