Name of
Samara
Hi everyone,
I am a Japanese and not familiar to American
name. My question is how the name of Samara is popular for
women's name in USA. Is it old fashion? Or is popular for a certain
ancestries? Any informations will be welcomed.
As far as the
name of Sadako, I know that we can find this name in Japanese women
at the present but is a little unusual because it is slightly old
fashion.

Samara...
It's an old Hebrew name, means 'Under the law or rule of god' or
some such. Samantha is a variation you're more likely to hear but
Samara is in use...

Samara is a little exotic for an American name, IMO, with
definitely more of a Mediterranean/Middle Eastern flavor; it's just
not "American as apple pie," if you know what I mean. Personally,
because of that I felt that it wasn't the best choice of a first
name for an American Sadako, especially someone who's supposed to be
born the daughter of Washington State horse breeders in 1970 (as
opposed to, say, Albanian immigrants). Moreover, I was surprised to
hear that it was pronounced "properly" in the movie and kept its
exotic tone (suh-MAH-ruh), rather than Americanized into something
like SAM-uhruh or suh-MEH-ruh. I guess it might be explained or
further explored in a sequel/prequel--perhaps the fact that she was
conceived and born in Europe has something to do with it.

Re:

and again i'm posting this information over ;p
meaning:
ruled by god origin: hebrew name: A female given name (rare: 1
in 50000 females; popularity rank in the U.S.: #2441) name: A
surname (very rare: popularity rank in the U.S.: #78802)
(alternate definition)noun: a winged often one-seed indehiscent
fruit as of the ash or elm or maple
and as we know now, the
tree with the brilliant red leaves (and was on fire) is a japanese
maple.
so, samara as a name in the us is rare.. but not
terribly so. there's a lot of meaning behind the name and i think it
suits the story just fine. i mean, come on.. it was the 70's, she's
lucky her parents didn't name her after someone in ABBA.
;p

To put it differently so the thick skulls can process it. Samara is
a different form of the name Samantha which a lot of us know is
common. Least it was common in the 70's for who hasn't heard of the
show Bewitched?

a few
things
Well I've found a few things
Samara Meanings: Gaurdian;
mountain, outlook, ruled by God Origin: Hebrew
I couldn't
really tell you if this is supposed to apply to Samara as a person.
Seems to nice to fit her. It might be that the name sounds
mysterious and it also begins with an "S" like Sadako.

SamSara...
Aw, shucks!
It's a real let-down to know that it's an old
Hebrew name. I had my own little theory going on, kind of fuzzy, but
the name "Samara" sounds way close to "samsara", being the Sanskrit
word for this illusory world of suffering that we all inhabit. And,
that kind of fit the whole sad tale, and even ties into the circular
ringishness if we think of how beings keep recycling themselves in
samsara, again and again reincarnating because of their negative
karma and wrong views, etc.
Not to mention, "Mara" was the
name of the demon that tempted the Buddha while he was sitting under
the bodhi tree.

samara
Your first name of Samara has given you the vision and foresight to
be able to organize others and to hold positions of responsibilities
with poise and self-confidence. This name creates an optimistic
outlook on life and favourable conditions in your personal affairs.
You have the ability to express your thoughts and ideas, and you are
friendly, likeable, and generous. You enjoy fun, laughter and
congenial association. This name also gives you an appreciation of
art, music, drama, or any of the many forms of expression in the
arts. Since you are quick and fluent in your expression, you have to
guard against boastfulness or dominating a situation. You are likely
a big eater, requiring heavy foods to satisfy your appetite.
Overeating can affect the bloodstream, causing it to become
overheated. In turn, skin problems could result. There could also be
weaknesses in the generative organs.

I have never heard the name Samara before this movie, but a samara
is the winged fruit of a maple tree (if you've ever seen those
little winged thingies propelling down from a tree and spinning
really fast...thats a samara). anyways, i know that the maple tree
was very significant in this movie (the one that it kept showing
clips of on the mountain w/clouds going by really fast). maybe her
name has some connection to that.

Re: Re:

The names Samara and Samantha are not derived from each other,
though they are both Hebrew in origin. Samara means "watch" (as in
vigil) or "outlook," while Samantha means "listener."
Some
names do have some direct relationships with each other, like Isabel
and Elizabeth, both originating from the Hebrew for "consecrated to
God," or Eileen, Eleanor, Helen, Ellen, and Elaine, all descended
from the Greek for "light." But Samara and Samantha, despite their
spelling similarities, don't share the same etymology.
