Another thing that I find at once fascinating and unnerving is not knowing whether Samara is coming or going. There were several scenes where I was convinced that she had her back to the viewer when she was in fact facing us. This effect is mostly created by the forward-hanging hair and is so very original. The reason the effect is so insidious is that, on various levels, one is lulled into a false sense of security that the threat is heading away from you…that you are unseen…that you can cover additional distance in the time that it takes Samara to turn around. And then in the split second that you realize your mistaken assumptions, the sudden escalation in threat level is paralyzing. One thing that remains completely unexplained for me, however, is the spooky sequence on the cursed tape where Samara shrinks into the shadows in the Morgan house. It’s so dark and indistinct that I can’t tell whether she is walking normally, shambling toward a victim, backing away from something in fear, or what?

that mirror scene give me the horrors. If she's walking, she's doing it without moving her upper body at all.

Is she going backward into the darkness, or is the darkness consuming her?

And then the way the mother looks over to where she just was with that smile on her face-like this is perfectly normal.

Is is me, or did anyone else think the mother was beautiful in a creepy way??

Like the shot of her brushing her hair in the mirror unnerved me because the way she fills the mirror, she should be standing right in front of it, but she isn't. It's like we are on the other side of the mirror.

Like Romper Room from Hell or something....

in the mirror, she's doing some kind of supernatural glide. Her mother does this in ring 2.... she floats sideways across said room, and then reappears, only showing one eye. very fooking creepy.

This scene entails samara using her powers to flick the mirror sideways for a split second... and also showing that her mother knew about the powers..... but this is inconsistent with the original, seeing as her mother was also psychic, and would be quite at home with her daughter's inheritance of such, but we are not really told about how , why , or even if samara is psychic.


again, why ringu kicks ass over remake... It makes sense ;)

Hehe, Romper Stomper Domper Doo....I see Anna, and Richard and Samara...(thump, falls over dead). I thought I was the only one who remembered that freakyness. God how I hated that show.

Remember when she comes out of the well? Did anyone notice that her hair comes out and hangs over the well before her body does?

I found out from a friend that for that scene they ended up recording Samara going into the well backwards, and then playing it backwards when she was heading towards the screen to get the creepy walking effect she had. *shudder*

Yeah, I noticed the hair. I thought that was pretty cool. My friend said the same thing about the Japanese original. It looks like it was filmed backward and then played in reverse.

Yup, that's what was done in both Japan and US versions. Note that Sadako still moves in that jerky way when she's out of the TV in Ryuji's apartment.

I think the video-like way that Samara jerks around is cool too, though it's more threatening and less eerie than the way Sadako moves.
