Becca, Irises,
Waves, etc...
I just saw the frekin movie last night...I'm pretty tired. I've
only seen the remake and know little else, so that is where my
ponderings will remain.
It seems I have a couple theories
that I can't seem to find having already been mentioned, in my
searching...so I'll place em on the table and leave:
Becca:
-She brings up the rumour of the video, and strongly implies
that after seven days the watchers will die... even though at that
point nobody's died yet.
-People have also noticed that she
frekin just says "Payce out, homes" I think after the phone "rings".
Where is Becca while her friend is getting her freak on?
-In
the hospital, Becca not only foresees Rachel's fate, but uses a
distinctly Samara-like voice.
For these reasons, I gotta
conclude that Becca is an evil b*tch who was in cahoots w/
Samara...possibly for a Paranormal access to Satellite
television.
Irises:
The movie title probably has a
dozen meanings. I'm guessing that the statement that the last thing
you see before you die is "the ring" not only implies all that crap
about the well and viro-curses, but adds weight to the theory that
Samara kills people by looking into their eyes. We all have rings in
our eyes. They're called irises.
As well, there's that old
saying about the eyes and the soul...
I'm guessing the Pre
Sequel will add depth to the idea that Samara is from the
devil.
SM00015: This is a question: I like putting colons at
the end of sentences instead of periods: What is she saying about
her father before the tape cuts out? Isn't she implying that he is
an evil person at that point? Why the hell would the tape just cut
out!
I'm guessing, as North Americans, we are being
subjected to some good ol' Hollywood misleading. At that point, from
our heads, the father is most likely the evil killer of poor Samara.
Samara says something like "Not Daddy..." and then our protagonist
gets smacked in the head.
Waves and Distortion: They keep on
resurfacing throughout the movie, from the very first lines about
conspiracies to the blurry faces (perhaps distorted by waves) on
screens to the water in the well.
As an excitable young porn
enthuist, I remember the days where I'd slam on channel 56 at 2:00
in the morning, pray my parents didn't catch me, and try to make out
the boobs. And I got pretty good at discerning boobs, but they were
usually bent half-way across the screen, just like the faces of the
potential victims on screen. The idea that the faces being distorted
as symbolic to the water of the well is a good one,
too.
Moesko Ferry: Watch the movie and look on the side. It
says "Washington" on there...so no Vancouver Islands (which is good
cause I live in BC).
Fight Club Plagiarism: DID ANYONE ELSE
NOTICE THE SUBLIMINAL 1 FRAME RING SHOTS? I noticed in the top right
hand corner of the screen what appeared to be a miniature ring...but
that's prolly just editing. Still, I KNOW there was one scene where
the ring pops up full-blast for a second, and another scene where
one of Rachel's eyes was blanked out (but that could be the film
itself, and unintensional).

I wouldnt call it outright plagiarism; while I cant outright point
to the first film to include subliminals, I can say almost
definately that fight club wasn't the first. That said, its a lovely
technique and gives you something to look for in your next viewing..
btw, theres something like 5+ fullscreen flashes of the ring, and
they made the cigarette burns baby rings as well ;p

Wasn't the first movie to use subliminals made to urge the audience
to buy popcorn or something? Grr... I can't recall. And the
cigarette burns are in every movie, its just that fight club drew
our attention to them.

Burn rings,

The subject of 'burn rings' and film reel cueing is discussed
extensively here: pub70.ezboard.com/ftherin...=803.topic

Yes, the first movie to use
subliminals was an 1950's experiment to test audience responses to
subliminal stimuli that incouraged the viewers to visit the
refreshment stands and purchase snackfoods. Though the results
indicated that subliminals did have the effect of hypnotic
incouragement, the researchers data collection method was inaccurate
thus invalidating the purpose of the test. However, this experiment
did get noticed by the FTC and was deemed dishonest and scandalized
to the point where it became taboo in advertising circles.
Interestingly enough, there is no legal clause in the US barring the
use of subliminals, in advertising or movies. Subliminals are in use
more than one thinks. Not just in movies like Fight Club or The
Ring, but as well in Department Stores muzak systems, with sub aural
messages incouraging patrons to not shoplift or misplace items while
shopping and such.

Re: department
store music systems
I dont doubt this one a single bit, as I did my (hard) time at an
Ames for a year and some change.. if I was scheduled moderatley
heavy during a week, by the end of it no matter where I walked
(store closing, empty hours.. basically any time) I heard what
seemed to be a conversation that I couldnt understand a word of..
Ive got overly precise hearing (perfect pitch, direction of sound
source,3-4x above average ability to discern gradation in pitch,
able to hear in ranges both higher and lower than the norm.. not
trying to toot my own horn, but my senses are pretty damn sharp; if
only puberty hadnt messed with my vision! ;p) Anyways, while working
there I never considered anything of the sort.. but the minute I
found a better job (not hellhole retail), it stopped completely. Im
basically left wondering just exactly what I was hearing, whether it
was some pseudo aural/brain 'fuzz' or if I was picking up on the
fact that there was something behind the irritating christmas music
on a pure sound level.

no joke, wah! http://www.muzak.com/
here's one small bit:
"Muzak's In-Store Marketing allows you
to speak to your target audience subtly, yet convincingly. Blended
seamlessly with appropriate music, our customized messages have been
proven to increase sales."
i'm really good at blocking out
"white noise" and muzak falls in that category for me. with a movie
like The Ring, i hyperfocus on the sights and sounds of the movie
and tune out the audience and theater
noises.

THANK
YOU!!
I have perfect pitch and exceptional hearing as well!! I now know
why I feel agitated in certain stores and that I'm not just hearing
voices in my head. I hear it almost as whispering, and sometimes it
sounds like crappy speakers.
I can't wait to go to Target and
really pay attention now!!!!
Does anyone here "feel" sound
waves as well as hear them? Like you can hear a radio 6 houses away
and know what song it is, even though you don't really "hear" it??
The subliminals in stores come through like that.

Re: THANK

Becca is not in cahoots with samara, but interesting thought. What
happened was Becca saw samara either during or after samara crawled
out of the tv and was most likely in the room when katie died. I
believe the books or the japanese movies explain this, but as a
result of seeing smara kill yet not seeing the video she was
infected as a carrier of the curse. So she's semi-cursed. Samara can
now use her to convey messages and such, i.e. the 4 days left to
live bit.
This is Samara?!

that's what I
think
I agree. You don't see all of Katie's room in that shot. Becca
could have been at the head of the bed with her knees drawn up, or
on the floor on the far side of the bed.
If I see it again,
I'll be sure to look for Becca while everyone else is trying to
figure out why a well is on the TV...

Re: that's what

In the original, Becca's counterpart says something like: "I'm
going to the toilet. Don't go upstairs without me". Shortly
thereafter Tomoko's (Katie's) time runs out and she appears to die
while still on the ground floor (and with Tomoko perhaps still in
the washroom). Somehow, I don't think who was where and when has
that much significance. What seems to matter is that when
Samara/Sadako comes for you at the appointed time, you die! And if
you're an innocent bystander (even in another room), you're close
enough to 'the presence' and it scars you for life.
